Supportng someone becoming a solo mum by choice
Most people don’t know anyone doing this, don’t know what to say, and are scared of saying the wrong thing.
This page is for you — the friend, sister, colleague, partner-in-crime, or family member who wants to be a SAFE place for a woman choosing this path.
It’s also for professionals — clinics, counsellors, fertility teams, doulas, midwives, educators and anyone in the perinatal world — who want to support solo mums with confidence and respect.
For friends & family
Someone you care about is considering having a baby on her own and maybe you have questions too.
Will she cope?
Will she be lonely?
Will this be hard?
Is this the right choice?
Here’s the truth:
Solo motherhood by choice is not a “last resort”. It is an empowered, intentional pathway to becoming a parent, and your support makes a difference.
What she needs most from you is:
curiosity instead of assumptions
genuine interest instead of judgement
encouragement instead of doubt
a place to talk through her feelings without being “fixed”
You don’t have to know the answers. You only have to stand beside her as she finds them.
How to support her beautifully:
Ask how she’s feeling today, not “are you sure?”
Celebrate her milestones the same way you would celebrate a couple’s
Use language that affirms her child’s belonging (“your family” not “just you”)
Listen more than you give opinions
Trust that she can do this — because thousands of women already have
