About Alisha Burns
Founder of Solo Mum Society
Coach. Author. Podcast Host. Solo Mum by Choice.
At 38, after years of infertility, the stillbirth of my son, the end of my marriage, and the sudden loss of my father, I reached a moment of clarity that quietly redefined my life.
I no longer wanted motherhood to be conditional on the right relationship appearing at the right time. I no longer wanted my future to hinge on someone else’s readiness. What mattered was not the fairytale I had once imagined, but the family I knew I was capable of building.
So I chose to become a mother on my own terms.
The decision was not impulsive. It was deliberate, researched and deeply considered. I understood fertility treatment. I understood the medical landscape. What I underestimated was how emotionally isolating this path could feel without proximity to other women making the same choice.
When I began sharing my journey publicly, what started as a personal Instagram account evolved into something far more significant. Women across Australia began reaching out — quietly at first, then steadily — asking about sperm donor options, fertility pathways, legal protections and the realities of pregnancy and parenting without a partner.
When my daughter was born seven weeks into Melbourne’s first COVID lockdown, those online connections became essential. I was physically alone, but not unsupported. That distinction changed everything.
It became clear there was a gap — not for inspiration alone, but for structured, intelligent, stage-specific support.
That gap became Solo Mum Society.
Building More Than a Support Group
Solo Mum Society began with the No Need for Prince Charming podcast, amplifying the stories of Australian women who had chosen solo motherhood. From there it expanded into education programs, private communities, published books, live courses and curated events.
Today, it operates as a connected ecosystem — supporting women from the moment they begin questioning whether they can have a baby on their own, through donor selection, fertility treatment, pregnancy, early motherhood and into the longer arc of raising children and building a life by design.
This is not a single-stage community. It is a long-term platform.
Our members are professionals, business owners, creatives and leaders. They are thoughtful decision-makers. They are not waiting for permission to build their families. They are choosing intention over negotiation.
And they deserve support that reflects that strength.
Solo Mum Society is now recognised as the leading solo motherhood platform in Australia and New Zealand.
Why This Work Matters
Solo motherhood by choice is one of the most deliberate decisions a woman can make. It requires legal understanding, financial foresight, emotional resilience and long-term thinking about a child’s identity and future.
It also requires community — but not the kind built on noise or endless opinion.
It requires thoughtful proximity to women at the same stage, or slightly ahead, who understand the nuance of this path. Women who recognise the courage it takes to build a family independently and who reflect that capability back to one another.
That is what Solo Mum Society provides.
Before Solo Mum Society
Before founding Solo Mum Society, I built my career in corporate loyalty, partnerships and strategic marketing, working across major consumer brands to design engagement ecosystems that created long-term value.
That background informs how Solo Mum Society operates today.
This is not simply a support network; it is an intentionally designed platform. The memberships are structured. The education pathways are strategic. The partnerships are aligned and value-driven. Every layer is built to serve women at different stages while ensuring sustainability and growth.
Understanding both the emotional landscape of solo motherhood and the commercial realities of building enduring communities allows me to bridge both worlds — ensuring that Solo Mum Society is not only meaningful, but lasting.
